Hi everyone! So it’s Girl Scout cookie season and I just love the Girl Scouts. I was never a Girl Scout myself, nor do I have any children who are Girl Scouts…but that doesn’t stop me from just loving everything that they do. So naturally, I want to buy some cookies this time of year and support the troop. Here’s why you should support the Girl Scouts:
They accept all girls and young women into the organization regardless of race, sexual orientation, gender identity, socio-economic background, or disability. They are an all-around inclusive organization focused solely on the empowerment of our young women. Girl Scouts:
- “Encourages girls’ healthy living through combating Relational Aggression and promoting girl-positive media images;
- Ensures girls feel emotionally and physically safe;
- Promotes girls’ involvement in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM);
- Develops financial literacy skills; and
- Gives a voice to girls in underserved communities” — Girl Scouts Official Website
They’re also just adorable little girls selling cookies. If you need more of a reason than that, then you should just move along….
So all that being said, how can I (a vegan) help the Girl Scouts with their cookie sales if I can’t eat their cookies?! Fear not! Vegan Girl Scout cookies do in fact exist.
Here’s the catch, the Girl Scouts use two different bakeries (depending on location) for their cookie production: ABC Bakeries and Little Brownie Bakers. ABC Bakeries produce vegan Girl Scout cookie (they even label them with a neat little green leaf that says “Vegan”). Oh god, how I love properly labeled vegan products!!
However, Little Brownie Bakers has yet to get with the program and ALL their cookies contain milk, eggs or whey (milk protein powder). How can you tell which cookie you’re buying?! The easiest way is to go by the names of the cookies, which are slightly different. This way, if you’re passing by a Girl Scout cookie table you can just take a look and if you see Savannah Smiles, Dulce De Leche or Trefoils cookies you know you’re out of luck…
So if you see some Lemonades or Peanut Butter Patties, you know you’re looking at some ABC Bakery cookies! YAY! Now, which ones of those are vegan?
Sadly, I live in an area that uses Little Brownie Bakeries so no vegan Girl Scout cookies for me… If YOU live in an area with vegan GS cookies available, send me some!!! Until next time, enjoy your cookies.
